Dana footbridge at Shrewsbury station
Restoring the steel-structured Grade II Dana footbridge, linking Shrewsbury’s historic railway station and town centre to a residential suburb, was part of a year-long renovation project. With its listed status, work entailed close liaison with conservationists, local authorities, Network Rail, Transport for Wales and engineering teams who completed extensive steelwork repairs.
Client: Network Rail/MPH Construction
The project:
Access to the site was from fully-boarded and fully-encapsulated scaffolding with an exclusion zone set up as to prevent unauthorised personnel entering the work space.
Surface preparation involved shot blasting to SA 2½ standards and, to minimise risk to the workforce, the blast pot was situated in compound area, as close as possible to the working area. All spent grit was removed on a daily basis.
Traces of lead in the steelwork called for specific protective measures to be implemented in accordance with Lead at Work regulations. In addition, all operatives used a decontamination unit throughout all the lead preparation processes.
